APPLETALK NETWORK IMPLEMENTATION
May 9, 1991
OVERVIEW
This document provides instructions for determining if your AppleTalk
network has a AppleTalk Phase 1 or Phase 2 implementation.
APPLETALK DIFFERENCES
AppleTalk Phase 2 is an enhancement of the Phase 1 implementation.
The most notable difference in Phase 2 is the maximum network
size.
- Phase 1 maximum network size = 254 nodes
- Phase 2 maximum network theoretical size = 16,580,102 nodes
INSTRUCTIONS FOR DETERMINING YOUR APPLETALK PHASE IMPLEMENTATION
1. Click on the apple icon in the upper left hand corner of the
finder and drag down until the control panel is highlighted.
2. When in the control panel, click on the network icon. A new
screen will appear in which at least one icon will display.
AppleTalk Phase 1 Implementation:
- If the local talk icon is highlighted
- If the highlighted icon has a single arrow going in
each direction
AppleTalk Phase 2 Implementation:
- If the icon shown has double arrows pointing in each
direction.
Another way to determine whether your network is an AppleTalk Phase 1
or Phase 2 implementation is to go into the system directory and
click on the icon that was highlighted in the control panel, then
press [COMMAND I].
In the new screen, the version number of the driver will be shown.
AppleTalk Phase 1 Implementation:
- Versions lower than 2.0
AppleTalk Phase 2 Implementation:
- Version 2.0 or higher
